Hard-hitting vocals and mathematical guitar riffs filled The Hope And Ruin, as the LA-based duo enticed a bustling crowd with slow, slacker rock.
Minimalism is often lost during the progression of bands. However, Girlpool, with their simple, guitar, bass and vocals set up, bucked the trend.
The group, consisting of Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tivided, released most recent LP, Before The World Was Big, in May, and have seen their UK fanbase explode.
Slow, lo-fi guitar riffs opened each track, before impressive harmonisation added layers.
Unexpected guitar progressions took centre stage before each short, sweet tune was brought to an abrupt end.
The bratty shouted harmonies of Before The World Was Big made way, as Tucker smeared big, distorted guitar solos over Tividad’s complex bass lines.
The duo’s chilled-out vibe radiated around the venue. “Is my voice half full, or half empty?” Tucker questioned, as she fought an oncoming sore throat.
The alluring sounds and relaxed nature of Girlpool fit perfectly. It’ll be exciting to see how they can progress from here.
