Snarky Puppy lived up to their reputation as award-winning artists with an extraordinary set to a sold-out Concorde 2.

Nine members of the 40-strong collective Snarky Puppy played an intense fusion of funk and jazz, packed with blistering solos from all the band’s members.

Composer and band leader Michael League’s claim that they had played a different set every night seemed almost unbelievable, as not one player fell off the tightrope.

Unfortunately the band was not joined by any of the artists they have previously collaborated and toured with - some popular songs were left off the set, but the fans enjoyed revisiting older material.

This also meant the entire gig was instrumental. The extreme technicality of the band became musically exhausting towards the end of the set, but their final songs brought the energy back up for an exciting encore.

In the space of an hour and a half, Snarky Puppy covered a spectrum of genres.

The whole band’s musicianship was uncompromisingly impressive.

It was impossible to identify any member above the rest: no player’s talent was in doubt, and all fitted together seamlessly to form a real music machine.
