A lot has changed for one-time Brighton residents The Maccabees over the course of four albums.

Four months after their last reached number one they returned to the city they once called home to deliver a passionate and riotous performance that will live long in the audience’s collective memory. This committed and driven performance ran the course of 18 songs in front of a backdrop of their latest album sleeve - displaying the memorial on Elephant and Castle roundabout.

Although that area may serve as their current home, on Monday night they returned to a city that had been instrumental in what they have become.

Joined by an additional three musicians the five’s sound was fleshed out by additional percussion, keyboards and brass.

Opening with the title track from fourth album Marks To Prove It they went on to deliver a performance that was geared as much to the past as it was the present.

It saw them delve into their back catalogue to give an airing to such rousing crowd pleasers as Wall Of Arms and Precious Time and X-Ray a song that guitarist Felix introduced by saying he remembered playing in the Freebutt to 30 people some ten years ago.

The Maccabees may have evolved but they still remain as one of Britain’s most loved bands.
