About two thirds in, front-man of The Maypoles and, of course, Steven Toast himself, Matt Berry, acknowledged his stellar comedy career with the themes from his TV shows Toast of London and Snuff Box.

Clearly wishing to be known as a musician and comedian rather than comedian with a band, the synchronicity between the two worked wonderfully.

Berry's sparkling charisma showed itself from the off in the extremely familiar October Sun, nicely weaving a motif from Berry's TV work into a great introduction.

Early appearances from fan favourites The Devil Inside Me and the unashamedly poppy Medicine showed a gift for writing irresistibly catchy hooks, though esoteric fare also took the spotlight.

The largely electronic instrumental piece, Music For Insomniacs, was hypnotic whilst an extended Snuff Box blended in as much prog-rock tomfoolery as humanly possible.

Looking somehow more like Vangelis than in his Shooting Stars impersonation, Berry, on vintage synth, with his talented backing band including the likes of The Bluetones' Mark Morriss, emerged as the champion of unfashionable music.

From Jeff Wayne-style War of the Worlds guitar and Jean Michel Jarre references through to a perfectly-chosen cover of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, this joyous celebration of the uncool emerged, well, cool.
