The fans turned out for an evening of monster metal at the Old Market on Saturday – and Saxon delivered.

The band which formed in 1976 were in the vanguard of the metal movement with the likes of Motorhead and Iron Maiden.

With a set featuring riffs of air guitar proportions and relentless vocals, the show ticked all the boxes for the committed metallist and featured most of the band’s favourite back numbers as well as songs from the latest album, Battering.

The final 30 minutes were delivered at speed and included Princess Of The Night, Crusader and 747.

For those who may prefer less metal and more rock, fledging combo, Naked Six provided a welcome contrast.

Imagine a combination of Led Zeppelin and Cream and throw in a touch of Iggy Pop and AC/DC for a flavour of where they were coming from.

The three music students from York were all under 18 years old but not fazed by playing to packed venue of committed Saxon fans and delivered a tight, energetic set.

Their three recorded singles Let It Play, Devil in Disguise and Revolution were outstanding.

We’ll be seeing more of these lads.
