In a packed out newly extended Resident record shop more than 80 fans huddled together to see Field Music.

The average age was present and consenting at the birth of Britpop but they are the stable diet of BBC 6music where Field Music are cherished and played.

It felt like a gathering of old friends at a party with the hum of chatter and the anticipation of a good time.

Within just over an hour they played both old (If Only The Moon Were Up) and new songs (The Noisy Days Are Over) and the banter flowed.

Their style had aspects of Prince in the arrangements and Prefab Sprout in the quirky pop beat and vocals. Their music was characteristically northern with the direct beats and earnest vocals.

There was a general consensus that we all really didn't want to go home at the end and would have quite happily had an all nighter with Field Music supplying the tunes.

It was the underpinning of a pop sensibility that got us hooked and kept us still coming back for more from a fine North East export: Field Music.

Go see them play in March at the Haunt.
