Rosie Lowe had a fantastically ambitious sound that dwarfed what you thought might be possible with the modest four-piece the Devon singer used to bring her songs to life.

On occasion Lowe’s melancholy pop was literally too grand for the intimate Hope and Ruin where she stopped off to show off her new album Control. So much so the formalities of an encore had to be played out like a mini-theatre production.

At the end of her set the singer explained she would not be departing the stage because of a lack of natural exit, but cheers for her and the band’s return would be rewarded by more songs.

Needless to say she got the vocal reception she deserved and the show went on.

She did work hard for it - the soothing sound Lowe had fed the audience was a delight.

The songcraft and production was on point but the music it was all held together by Lowe’s rich voice.

Breakthrough track Right Thing might well be one of the most underrated songs of the last few years.

The song which lent its name to the album title, Control, and the funky I’ll Be Gone in particular left the crowd satisfied long before the end.
