If hell is full of accordion players then Phil Cunningham is the devil himself.

He once asked the Queen if she was thinking of taking up the instrument.

After 30 years of touring the world together Bain and Cunningham are musically a married couple, the yin and yang of traditional Scottish music.

Their performance to a packed house was simply breathtaking and exquisite.

Two men playing two instruments, yet it sounded like one man playing three or more.

Fingers moved with a bewildering speed through reels and hornpipes, then swept majestically and with the lightest of touches round the aires and waltzes.

The Cunningham penned Irish Beauty was just that.

The two sat, rarely having eye contact, swept along by the current of their playing.

"So, are we off then?", said Cunningham, before they leapt together into The Duke of Runrig. The repartee was as polished as the playing, the humour had the timing and affectionate familiarity of Eric and Ernie.

This was a consummate performance in every sense.

Cunningham quipped that they play at such speeds for fear that they might not reach the end! But Shoreham knew that the devil has all the best tunes.
