I witnessed my first kitchen utensil solo and darn, could Tatu Rönkkö make the mini frying pan sound good.
Liima is basically the Danish band Efterklang, made up of three old friends, Mads, Casper and Rasmus who transformed their sound by adding Finnish percussionist Tatu.
It was clear that these guys were all on the same musical page and seemed to communicate telepathically when creating their spacious, multi-layered soundscapes onstage.
The fun they were having was infectious and they connected just as well with the audience as with each other.
As well as kitchen utensils, they used synths, distorted vocals, distorted bass and drum samples.
The set started with the tapping of a miked up glass bell jar for the song Your Heart from their debut album ii. It was hard to pinpoint exactly what genre their music was but Your Heart seemed to epitomise their sound.
Music to dance, laugh or just generally float to.
As well as songs like America from the album, they also tried out some new ones like Jamaica. They went down just as well.
The set ended with a virtuoso flurry of fingers on the drum machine so fast that the rest of the band downed tools to gawk along with us.
Fantastic live performance.
