LADYHAWKE is one of a number of bands at the moment not so much influenced by the 1980s but the embodiment of it.

If you lived through the decade, many of these songs were like a kind of time machine, teleporting you back. However, for most of the mixed but packed crowd, it was the first time around.

The diminutive but powerful Kiwi singer seemed to cast a spell over her devoted following with many people singing along to every word.

With some of the early songs lacking drive and failing to connect emotionally, she settled in and built the atmosphere, and the four piece band were at their best when layering the synth with guitar to anthemic singalong choruses.

She told us it was the last night of her favourite tour so far and the enthusiasm and obvious affection in the crowd backed this up. The band however didn't quite match this energy but gave enough to satisfy, with slightly edgier stand-out tracks such as Professional Suicide and Paris Is Burning. They encored to everyone's delight with My Delirium, getting us bouncing, singing and feeling ready for Saturday night.
