To be drawn into Kiran Leonard’s world is a unique privilege. The 20-year-old’s sprawling compositions are as intricate as they are confrontational.
It would be churlish to seek comparison points for an artist whose sound is so multi-layered and kaleidoscopic.
Beginning with the epic Pink Fruit, Leonard immediately showcased the ambition of his songwriting to a small but enthusiastic crowd.
A sore throat clearly affected his vocals on the first couple of tracks, with melody occasionally being substituted for rushed, off-kilter cries; but the Oldham native recovered like a pro.
At points he tackled his left-handed Stratocaster like a savage battling a beast, being drawn back and forth by the neck as he tried to gain the upper hand.
Kiran Leonard may not have a broad appeal, but he is truly one of the UK’s most exciting talents.
