As an ageing punk rocker, a Michael Ball and Alfie Boe duet wouldn’t be at the top of my bucket list. However, my beloved grey-haired mother loves them and who am I to argue? In fact, demand for tickets to this show was so high, Ball and Boe will return on Tuesday, December 6 for another gig at the end of their UK tour.

Ball and Boe were chiefly here to flog their new album – Together – featuring Broadway tunes and classic songs they have always wanted to record. But aren't they having some fun doing it?

Surprisingly, Boe burst into giggles on numerous occasions, most obviously when getting the timing wrong during a James Bond medley. Most performers would pretend it didn't happen but the great thing about Boe, and Ball, is they don't take themselves too seriously. And their friendship is obvious on stage.

Kicking off with standard duets, the boys also get to shine on their own, including Boe's stunning rendition of The Who's Reign O'er Me, the arrangement giving the wonderful 18-piece band the chance to really shine. Follow that, Ball, I thought. But he did, with an incredibly moving Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar.

And there were plenty of other pleasant surprises, such as Boe's tilt as Elvis and the duet Speak Softly My Love (theme from The Godfather). They finished with I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables and You'll Never Walk Alone. I thought I was in for a cheesy night, but by gum these boys proved me wrong. Or am I getting old?
