Ghostpoet's declaration that he had simply "come to play a few ditties by the seaside" delighted the Saturday night Digital audience, and the talented rapper duly blew them away with a set that rose and swelled from a relatively downbeat intro to a thrilling finale.

The 28-year-old (real name Obaro Ejimiwe) has been touring material from his critically acclaimed debut album Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam for some time now, yet it has never sounded as good as it did on Saturday night.

After being nominated for this year's Mercury Prize and appearing on Later With Jools Holland, Ghostpoet has really honed his live sound. On Saturday the mix was perfect and, aided by masterful musicianship from his guitarist and drummer, Ghostpoet's deft lyrics of stark clarity rang through.

Survive It was greeted with triumphant hands raised throughout the club, and its message of living through economic and emotional hardship ("It's a dinner for one with the dimmer lights on") really resonates today.

Liiines and Garden Path went down a storm, yet the track of the night was Cash & Carry Me Home. A stunning finish saw Ghostpoet leading the audience in a frenzied bounce, before hopping down into the crowd to shake hands and receive many bear hugs.

Here is an artist who hasn't let his growing reputation go to his head; his real success is that he tells the truth about the difficulties of growing up without resorting to lazy clichés.

And that's why the crowds keep coming back for more.
