“Some of you may know,” said a deadpan Adam Cohen, “that I am related to a famous Canadian songwriter… Celine Dion.”

It got a big laugh. But this deft joke nicely acknowledged that, yes, he knew many in the audience were there because of his dad, Leonard.

Still, the likeable and very funny Adam Cohen may be that rare thing – the child of a star who handles this unenviable position with ease.

Like his father, Adam specialises in songs about sex and relationships. Yet it never seems like he is trading on the family name.

Kicking off with Sweet Dominique, the bulk of the show was from excellent new album Like A Man – a work that unashamedly embraces his heritage.

But songs like What Other Guy, Out Of Bed and Girls These Days show he has a surer ear for melody than his old man. (There was a sense of real pride when he revealed Paul McCartney had told him he wished he’d written Overrated.) And although that voice can’t hide its origins, a version of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On proved he’s a gifted singer.

Cohen senior’s songs inevitably made an appearance. There was a snippet of Bird On A Wire in Hey Jane and a house-lights-up, singalong version of So Long Marianne.

Cohen, backed by a duo on guitar, cello and keyboards, summed it up when a woman in her 60s leapt on stage to hug the son of her hero.

“Hey," he said, "I’m an even bigger Leonard Cohen fan than you are.”
