The Argus: Grasscut

Grasscut

From: Brighton

Influences: Martin Hannett, Oliver Postgate, Robert Wyatt, John Barry, Gavin Bryars, Barry Gray, Bernard Herrmann, Kraftwerk, Young Marble Giants, Josef K, John Cage, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Cabaret Voltaire, Brian Eno, Murcof, Claude Debussy, William Wordsworth and Ralph Vaughn Williams among many others.

Profile: Brighton-based duo Grasscut take their inspiration from samples recorded secretly on mobile phones or sampled from vintage celluloid or vinyl. Head honcho Andrew Phillips, formerly of Slovo and One Giant Leap, describes the music as: "a celebration of England at its naffest and most beautiful, yearning for the woods but still able to hear the motorway".

The live show is based around two people armed with a laptop and home-made software playing double bass, violin, stylophone, electric guitar and whatever else is laying around.
