A trio of world premieres are among seven free installations, performances and workshops following the theme of All At Sea for the third Undercurrent Festival this weekend.

The Shoreham festival, which was founded by Ruth Dudman and is currently co-directed by Rosalie White and Sally Rose, incorporates dance, visual arts, sound and film.

Among this year’s attractions are a chance to deconstruct time in artist Abigail Conway’s TIME LAB by creating jewellery out of old timepieces, a treasure hunt by the beach huts at Shoreham Beach for 25 gold leaf pebbles painted by artist Caroline Wright, and Amy Sharrocks’ Museum Of Water at the War Memorial in East Street, featuring donations of liquid and stories from town residents.

Artist Neil Callaghan will be giving a solo performance tomorrow at 3pm and 8.15pm, and Sunday at 3pm, from the deck of a houseboat.

A Certain Shaft Of Light tells a tale inspired by French yachtsman Bernard Moitessier’s round- the-world voyage.

The trio of world premieres include two pieces developed at previous Undercurrent Festivals. Lewis Gibson’s Sitting Here Together Forever, which runs daily on Shoreham Beach, examines who we choose to memorialise, and includes a live soundtrack of true stories.

And Me And The Machine’s The Door Project encourages visitors to look through the spyholes of five locked doors to watch a series of video installations. Locations are listed at the Undercurrent Information Point in East Street.

Meanwhile sound artist Sheila Ghelani has created an installation of collected soundtracks within a living tree in The Old School House, Ham Road, which will be augmented at noon tomorrow and Sunday by a performance from the St Mary de Haura Handbell Ringers.

“This programme is about trusting the process and what happens when we go where the water takes us, not trying to steer our paths too tightly,” says Dudman. “Sometimes we might come up from beneath the surface to somewhere better than we ever expected.”
