Even someone living under the thickest of rocks cannot have failed to notice Brighton’s obsession with American cuisine.

If it’s been deep fried or pulled, chances are it’s being served up in BN1 by the platter load.

Yet while this foodie craze continues to maintain its artery-lining grip on the city, for one Brighton establishment Americana buzz is much more than a passing fad.

RockOla Coffee Bar in Tidy Street is a tribute to all things rockabilly, and has been celebrating the best of the USA dining for around 14 years.

The store is an ode to the very best of 1950’s décor, with a heartily stocked juke box and easy access to the Wax Factor record store next door.

Leave behind the splinters and numb derrières of recycled hipster interiors or Scandinavian minimalism. RockOla is a welcome change with comfy booths and winking Elvis portraits.

The menu nods to the classics, with a few staple British favourites thrown in for good measure – think burgers, fries, milkshakes and jacket potatoes. We opted for the bacon and blue cheese burger, which was a wonderful blend of crunchy bacon, sharp blue cheese and rich salty beef. Second up was the Hawaiian burger, a colossus of beef, egg, cheese, pineapple, beetroot and onion rings. Deliciously sweet, salty and rich, all burgers come topped up with lettuce, tomato and a serving of classic fries.

Vegetarian diners won’t be left gazing at ground beef, wondering what if. Options range from the falafel, olive and hummus salad, a vegan hot dog or the classic, glorious stack of buttermilk pancakes and syrup. Be sure to wash it all down with a glass of the surprisingly refreshing pink lemonade, made from their own recipe and not overly sweet. For any with a sweet tooth, the cake selection looked just as tempting.

Are these the best burgers in Brighton? It’s a tall order to award any one meaty bite such a prestigious accolade. However, with a store full of happy customers and a hell of a soundtrack, you’d be hard pressed to find another restaurant that is serving them up with so much fun.
