Uckfield singer-songwriter Kathryn Anderson has just released The Road Less Travelled, an EP recorded in the titular home of American country music, Nashville.

The 23-year-old, who started writing songs at 16 after getting her first guitar as a reward for exam success at Heathfield Community College, spent three months in the city writing, performing and recording the EP, and even appeared as an extra on the cult ABC show Nashville.

“My particular style comes from the classic sounds of country, lots of steel guitar, the ‘old time’ feel. Lyrically, I try and tell my stories with honesty in the way that Loretta Lynn does. Musically, I am probably a blend of Ashley Monroe and Kacey Musgraves. So there are modern and classic (1950s and 1960s) influences there. I love the variety in the genre of country music – in the sound and in the lyrical content.

“I’ve been to Nashville a few times, for writing experience and to network as well as to record. I tend to go out there when I can for that reason, and the last time I went I wanted to come home with something like this that I could be proud of. I knew I wanted to record this project in Nashville – they had the sound I wanted down to a tee and their facilities and the musicians over there are world-class. My experiences in Nashville strongly influenced the music I am releasing on my new record and I can’t wait for people to share the songs.

“When I was 20 I fronted a rock band as part of my course at university. We played at the Southampton Guildhall to 300 people. As a solo artist I’ve played at Uckfield Civic Centre to a similar amount of people. At the moment my main plans are to see what happens with this CD. In the long term I’m not 100% sure – I just know that Nashville will be in there somewhere.”
