On The Radar #75 Calling Curtis

FRESH from a sold-out show at Brighton’s Patterns last month, Calling Curtis introduce themselves ahead of a forthcoming live EP.

“Jacob [Bugden, guitarist and vocalist] and Jazz [Pope, keyboards] met when they were at school, and Sam [Abbo, bass] and Fin [Abbo, drums], met when they were born - coz they're brothers. We've all been writing songs forever but things started getting good when we started writing together last year.

“When Jacob and Jazz were playing on their own their bass player was called Curtis. Basically, he wasn't very reliable and so we had to keep calling him all the time. One day Jacob said: “I spend my life Calling Curtis” - and that's just how it happened.

“Our biggest influences are The Doors, Jack White and The Strokes. We also spent years listening to The Beatles, Jacob loves The Libertines and Jazz grew up influenced by bands like The Cure.

“We hope to have a live EP out in the autumn. We recently recorded some demos of our new songs but we just seem to be on a writing roll so we're rehearsing all the time, jamming together, writing lots of new songs and hopefully putting down some recordings over the summer.

“It’s really difficult to capture the live sound. So much of what we are is our energy which comes alive on stage. It's really hard to get that rich, electric, full sound. We don't want to sound too clean, we want the sound to be quite messy.”

Calling Curtis play The Haunt, in Pool Valley, Brighton on Wednesday, August 19.
