On The Radar #77 Jouis

PSYCHEDELIC rockers Jouis came together seven years ago as Jouis And The Chic Geeks. Tomorrow sees them headline the regular city new music showcase Spectrum.

“WE’RE from various places in the south of England; Luton, London, Alton and the New Forest. We met in Brighton seven years ago when we were studying music, and soon began jamming and writing songs together. We soon started gigging in Brighton, London and Bournemouth road testing early tunes. We then had a line up shuffle, shortened the name to Jouis and went on some of our first tours around the south.

“We all come from fairly different musical backgrounds, ranging from heavy metal, traditional folk, classical, jazz and rock n roll. As a band we are influenced by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, John Martyn, Bob Marley, CSN(Y), and musicians we have met and played with over the years so far.

Our sound is a mixture of all of the above while trying to maintain a groove based, psychedelic jazz flavour. Someone once referred to us as Post-Jazz Nurserycore Battle-Psych!

“Our biggest gig to date was The Psychedelic Treehouse gig at the Astor Theatre in Deal, Kent this April. We played with friends Lapis Lazuli and Syd Arthur, plus we had the added awesomeness of The Psychedelic Treehouse decor/visual team with us. We have also played at some great festivals over the years. Our last big Brighton show was at the Old Market with Normanton Street, Time For T and Yonaka.

“We have self-released two EPs, a 7” single and our debut album, Dojo, came out on November 3 last year. We recorded the album at Beetroot Studios, which is a studio we helped to build in an old office block in Brighton.

“We are in the studio currently working on lots of new material for our second album. We are planning on releasing a single in the near future as part of the lead up to the new album in 2016.

It would be great to travel further and set up studios to record in other countries, underwater, maybe even on the moon if they’d have us…”

Jouis play Spectrum at Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, in New Road, on Saturday, July 18, from 7.30pm. Also on the bill are Joe McCarty's Band, Buddha Blood and Neuroharp. Tickets £4, call 01273 709709.
