A NEW multi-venue festival is launching this November following in the footsteps of last year’s Drill.

The 1,000-capacity city festival Mutations #001 will be taking over venues across Brighton and Hove on Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29, featuring international musicians across genres ranging from house to doom rock.

The idea is the brainchild of city promoters One Inch Badge, who co-curated last year’s Drill Festival with art punk band Wire.

“Mutations is slightly broader in its outlook,” says Alex Murray, founder of the record label and promotions company.

“We think the attitudes and understanding of music is similar with all the acts we have programmed no matter what their genre. The people into this music are pretty open-minded and will hopefully discover some exciting new music en route to seeing their favourites.”

Already named on the inaugural line-up are aggressive noise pioneers Lightning Bolt, Canadian rockers Metz, experimental house producer John Talabot, Texan singer-songwriter and former Lift To Experience frontman Josh T Pearson, doom rock merchants Om, experimental artist Chelsea Wolfe, critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Natalie Prass, and breakthrough electronica act Tourist.

Brighton acts announced so far include songwriter and cellist Abi Wade, recent Transgressive signings Blaenavon, and electronica artists Mount Bank and Foreign Skin.

Murray is planning a more innovative programme, to ensure no-one misses their favourite acts.

“At the start of the day we will have lots of small venues hosting three or four acts,” he says.

“As the day goes on there will be bigger venues, but less of them – with only one or two big venues by the end of the day so the big bands don’t clash.

“During Drill some of the venues were quite far apart – from Concorde 2 in Madeira Drive to All Saints Church in Hove. With Mutations the Saturday will be predominantly in Hove, and on Sunday it will mainly be in Brighton.”

As well as the live music – with more acts still to be announced - there will be pop-up record fairs and exhibitions of poster art and photography.

Pre-release tickets, costing £50 for the full weekend, are on sale at www.seetickets.com and Resident, in Kensington Gardens, Brighton, on Wednesday, August 26, from 9am.

General tickets go on sale on Friday, August 28, from 9am.

Drill: Brighton

The 2014 Drill Festival in Brighton was curated by cult art-punks Wire in December, following an inaugural event in Seattle.

A total of more than 100 bands played 14 different venues across three days to 2,000 people.

On the bill were Swans, who played an exclusive co-headline set with the curators, Mercury Music Prize winners Young Fathers, Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett and Londoners Younghusband and Savages.

There was also a strong Brighton and Sussex contingent, including psych-rockers Toy, Chichester Kraut-rockers Traams and cult favourites British Sea Power who played a set at Hove’s All Saints Church.
