On The Radar #87 Two Jackals

FOLLOWING the release of their comeback single Foxglove on Seven Dial Records, having been on a 12-month hiatus, Teo Kohn introduces the newly reinvigorated Brighton band.

“We met at school. Mojo, Fed and Kiel (not in the band any more) played post-rock together, and were joined after a few months by myself. We decided to broaden from purely instrumental tracks and began to draw more heavily from more conventional rock influences.

“It’s difficult to articulate exactly the sound of the band. People say that our music could be filed next to bands like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, mid-1990s Swans and Pornography-era Cure.

“The biggest gig we have played would be Glastonbury, where we played on the BBC Introducing stage. We have also played a sold out night at The Haunt in Brighton.

“We took a break because we became disillusioned with the direction of the band as our own tastes matured. We didn’t want to play our own songs anymore. We took a year out to concentrate on songwriting without the pressure of live shows. It would’ve been difficult to drastically change our set without the break as we would’ve needed to keep rehearsing the old tracks as well as figuring out the new ones. We wanted to completely reinvent ourselves, rather than attempt a gradual transition.

“We don’t have any plans for an album just yet. We intend to keep gigging and songwriting until we feel like we are ready to write a full length album.”

Two Jackals play Halloweiner at the Green Door Store, in Trafalgar Arches, Brighton, on Saturday, October 31. Doors at 11pm, entry is free.
