On The Radar #89 Dog In The Snow

COMING to Brighton from Singapore and Poland, electronica-influenced duo Dog In The Snow is launching their new EP Uncanny Valley with a free show on Wednesday.

Below Helen Brown introduces the band.

“I have been writing songs since I was about fifteen. It was my creative and cathartic outlet in a very academically intense school life. I met Eva Bowan last year through mutual friends; I had been taking steps towards a more electronic-based sound and knew Eva would be the perfect person to help with this direction.

“One of my main loves is how to make a guitar sound not like a guitar, a fun challenge that usually yields exciting results. It is important for us to stay sonically unique so we choose to combine warm organic sounds with cold electronic ones. We also use a lot of hardware and software processing to achieve the desired sound effects.

“The actual writing and recording of Uncanny Valley didn't take long at all. I get periods of technological fatigue, and one of these periods became the instigator for the songs on the EP.

“The tracks were chosen on a loose thematic basis: which is the aesthetic phenomenon of robotics professor Masahiro Mori's Uncanny Valley. The hypothesis states that when something/someone looks and/or moves almost human but is still slightly off, it creates a unique feeling of revulsion and uneasiness in the observer. I felt like all the songs touched on this existential feeling.”

Uncanny Valley is released today by Brighton-based label Love Thy Neighbour. It will be available via bandcamp, at live shows and at Resident Records in Kensington Gardens. The launch show is on Wednesday, October 14, at The Hope And Ruin, in Queen’s Road, Brighton from 8pm. Support from Speak Galactic, Rusalka and a DJ set from Fear Of Men.
