After the surge of identikit indie-rock and, more recently, indie-electro acts filling the pages of the music press over the past few years, it’s little wonder that a change of focus and a more original set-up excites music lovers as much as Why? does.

But even after the success of former outfit cLOUDDEAD, Yoni Wolf seemed visibly taken aback by the fervour of a crowd who knew each word of his dry, and often dark, raps and the “screaming jailbait girls at the front”. With two drum kits, a bass and various other percussion instruments, Why? breathe with their rhythm section and live through a style of rap which is evocative of Woody Allen’s witty urban-American storytelling.

All four band members shared instrumentation duties between them, but Yoni seemed to be blessed with the ability to physically divide his body in order to pack Why?’s five-minute jams with as many musical ideas as possible.

As a marching-band rhythm or a melodic zylophone riff surged through his limbs, Yoni’s head remained rigid as he concentrated on delivering his sophisticated streams of consciousness which were executed with perfect control.

An unexpected and unlikely indie hero maybe, but a very deserving one none the less.
