For those brave enough to scale Trafalgar Street in the snow and ice on Friday, this wasn’t an average gig. It’s testament to the popularity of White Star Liners that so many people ventured out – perhaps seeking a dose of the band’s warm indie-styled recordings.

Despite not issuing their studio sheen some cranked-up guitars, played with an air of informality, cooked up a gloriously unhinged show. This, infused with their key influences, complemented a frivolous Christmas party atmosphere. Balloons and party poppers were met with what every party needs: three dancing girls. They weren’t just for show though – their vocal harmonies added depth to the sound.

The audience was treated to a mixture of songs from the band’s debut album and those from a new EP called You Can Do It, We Can Help.

If you can imagine The Beatles plugging into Marshall amps and 1970s synthesizers then you’re on the right track.

Towards the end, a cover of Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra upped the ante further on its reception and, given time, it may not be long before the same level of appreciation applies to the songs they call their own.
