Sheffield Park and Garden is one of the jewels in the crown of the National Trust’s garden collection. This 120-acre garden of majestic trees and beautiful shrubs is set around five magnificent lakes and was laid out in the 18th century by the great landscape designer Capability Brown. Adjoining parkland gives visitors another 265 acres of wide open spaces and dramatic skies to explore.

In recent weeks, the team at Sheffield Park has been busy removing snow from plants to prevent damage. Hopefully, by the time this column is printed, the snow will have gone but there’s plenty to be getting on with in your garden.

February is your last chance to plant cane fruits. Even if you don’t have an area that you can dedicate to fruit, you can always slot one or two into beds and borders; they take up little room. Don’t forget your containers; check there is enough moisture in the compost and if you do need to water them, ensure no frost is forecast. If any conifers in your garden have been battered over the winter, do not remove damaged limbs as this will make them unsightly; simply tie them back in to restore shape and form.

Lastly, feed the birds. Gardens are more than trees, shrubs and lawns; they are also about sound, scent and wildlife. Not only will you be helping the birds through a difficult time of the year but in turn, a well-fed bird won’t destroy buds or bulbs. Consider having a bird box, which will provide great entertainment throughout the year.

We hope to see you at Sheffield Park and Garden very soon. The network of meandering paths makes it a wonderful place to walk in these tranquil winter months and the family trails and natural play areas ensure a great day out for younger visitors. Hug an ancient tree, lend an ear to our incredible waterfalls and take in glorious winter scents. There are no “keep off the grass” signs here, but one last tip for February: do keep off your own lawns – you will see the benefits in spring.
