Spring is well under way at Nymans. The daffodils are out in force, carpeting the lawns with cheerful, yellow stars. Dainty rosettes of primroses can be found around every corner, signalling that the worst of the frosts are over and it’s time to start planning for summer. At Nymans, this means it’s pruning, which isn’t as tricky as it seems.

Hydrangeas, shrub roses and cornus are all in need of some essential care. With hydrangeas and shrub roses it’s hard to go wrong if you stick to a few rules. Remove any branches with signs of the Triple D’s; Dead, Damaged, Diseased. Hydrangeas can be pruned back to the first or second set of good buds and shrub roses to an outward facing bud, with a sloping cut. This will help keep your plants happy and healthy.

The cornus, which has faithfully provided bright winter interest, are due for some spring care too. Coppicing the plant to one or two buds from the framework stimulates vigorous, new growth, ensuring that next winter’s display will be an intense show of brilliant colour.

As well as pruning, the garden team at Nymans have been hard at work in the Sunk Garden. The area has been redesigned with an elegant Italianate style. The soil has been re-sculpted to create an amphitheatre effect and Italian cypress and yew columns have been planted. Now it’s time for turfing.

Spring is an excellent time for turf care, getting lawns ready to look tip-top in summer. The grass is starting to grow so lawns may require a feed. Moss and thatch can be removed with a vigorous raking, allowing air to the grass roots, creating a healthier lawn. Sparse patches on the lawn can be over-seeded. Lightly rake the bare areas first, then sparingly sprinkle turf seed on them. You should see results within ten days.

Nymans is full of the joys of spring now. Bees, birds and butterflies are enjoying the garden in abundance and there are flowering bulbs galore. It’s the perfect place to escape from life’s hustle and bustle, and delight in springtime at its best.
