Bungalow Town on Shoreham Beach grew rapidly early last century and was home to a flourishing film industry.

But in 1940, with invasion thought to be imminent, the authorities gave residents two days to move out. Their homes were blown or boarded up. Only the Church of the Good Shepherd (pictured) survived and it is still there today.

The beach reopened in 1947 and houses surround the church once more but the excitement of Bungalow Town had disappeared.

The picture comes from Hollywood-by-Sea – A Pictorial Chronicle of Bungalow Town by Edward and Alice Colquhoun. It is available in Shoreham for £7.99.
