This classic picture of the Palace Pier in Brighton shows it at its beautiful best before ugly additions were made to the sea end and large rides were installed.

The postcard, submitted by Alan Dart of Storrington, is undated but was probably taken in the 1960s. It shows the old landing stages complete before they were partially destroyed in 1973 when a barge broke lose and battered them.

That also ended the life of the theatre at the end, a handsome building which put on summer shows each year.

It is easy to see why the pier, one of the biggest attractions in Brighton, is also a listed building.
