Going to the Devil’s Dyke beauty spot took an hour and a half by wagonette from Brighton in the Victorian era. The journey started in King’s Road, not far from the Aquarium, and two horses pulled the vehicle up Montpelier Road.
At the junction with Old Shoreham Road, a third horse was attached to help pull the wagonette up Dyke Road – a long haul. There was a halt for refreshment at the Dyke Road Hotel.
It was hard work for the horses and none too comfortable for the passengers riding over rough roads.
The exact location of this picture, sent in by Mrs L Scott of Steyning, is unknown.
