This picture of the coast road at Telscombe Tye was taken in March 1939 and there is not a soul to be seen. It was a single-carriageway concrete road, replacing a rough track which had run along the chalk cliffs from Black Rock to Rottingdean.

There has been huge housing expansion since then and great growth in car ownership making this road, now considerably widened, one of the busiest in Sussex.

Because it is not feasible to build a bypass over the Downs, congestion will continue for the foreseeable future.

The picture is from historian David Rowland of Telscombe Cliffs.
