The north side of Western Road, Brighton’s main shopping street, was widened in the 1930s.
Down went the old, largely undistinguished buildings and in their place came modern stores.
Some were in the fashionable Art Deco style of the time as this picture clearly shows.
The shop of Barrington’s was at the Clock Tower end by the junction with Dyke Road.
Behind it the Imperial Arcade was constructed and it still exists today although the shops have been changed.
Many of the 1930s stores in Western Road have been altered or rebuilt. Few of them look better as a result.
