Club managers blame violence on ‘the few’ in review

Club managers have blamed a succession of violent incidents in and around their venue on a few people.

Managers of the Light Bar and Liquid Lounge in Worthing say their venue is still “open for business as usual” while a review is carried out on their licences.

The Argus revealed yesterday how Sussex Police had asked Worthing Borough Council to carry out a review after 37 reports of sexual assaults, dance floor fights and breaches of the licences since April last year.

Manager James Lanz said: “We are currently in discussions with Sussex Police in a combined effort to stop antisocial behaviour brought about by a few members of the public in Worthing.

“We are in absolute cooperation with Sussex Police to ensure that a safe and enjoyable environment is maintained for everyone in Worthing.”

If club managers are aware of these alleged 'few' people why on earth are the doorstaff allowing them entry?

Not good enough. As club manager it is your duty to ensure 'the few' don't spoilt it for everyone else. After 37 incidents there is no more room for excuses. Let's hope Worthing council backs the police on this one and shuts this place down.

I can't stand the place personally, but where should these 'young people' go instead of here if it closes down? Whetherspoons will only hold them for so long of an evening...

Basically more cctv and security needs put in place,if sussex police had their way they would shut all licenced prenises so they dont have to get out of their cars and vans.Inside and directly around the venue should be upto the venues security but elsewhere a bobby actually on the beat would deter most of the trouble.Brighton also has a problem west street is well policed most of the time but the rest of the city such as st james street is left to defend for itself ,even after an assault in st james street the police are slow to respond ,i think its because frontline police have been cut.

I find it hard to understand why this premises wasn't taken to review months ago, had it been in Brighton they would have been all over this place a year ago. I am aware of a number of assaults that have happened here, one of which the person injured had to give up her job due to the injury she recieved, and others reported about in the argus.
It's the club and door staff at fault, the rules are not to serve drunks, not to let drunks in, had proper training been given to staff and updated regularly then these problems wouldn't have happened in the first place.
If its just a few people causing these problems as they say why on earth where they allowed in? I'd say the few people that caused this problem were the managers and staff of the club!!!!

The only way around this is to go back to the good old days MEMBERS ONLY and you have to apply 48 hours in advance, and membership card held at the for until the customer goes

Quite agree. I think this has been allowed to carry on for so long because it's Worthing. It's seen as a soft touch. Time for the council to put its foot down.

It's a sh*thole that should be closed down or only Chavvy scum can go to, then bombed!. Worthing has no variety. Bar release is good, but not for the end of the night. Bar 10, same thing. Liquid has such a bad rep, the floors are sticky, music is decent now and again and the drinks are way overpriced. It's obvious that the security do not care who enters as they let anyone is despite the "secure entry" process of 5 bouncers and the screen of faces.I think most people feel very unsafe whilst being there and the violent people go there looking for a fight. Yes it's just my opinion but I wonder how many others share it!!

I work as a security manager for a security company, and incidents like this and poorly trained staff sicken me.

I work mainly in cities around the UK and we use response vehicles, highly trained door supervisors, and in some of the worst areas we have access to our own medics trained to a paramedic standard. All these professionals have reduced crime, violence and incidents at the venues dramatically, due to their dedication, and on-going training.

It’s a very basic system to put in place, and only requires a small cash injection from local businesses. Worthing sounds like its desperately in need of some security company working closely with the council and police to make the town centre a safer environment for the residents to be able to enjoy a safe night/day out.

I blame poor management on both the security companies and councils for allowing these situations to continuously happen, and also the police cuts aren't helping. I’d urge any local night life spots wanting to take security of their licenced venue security, no matter how small, to contact a security company that can actually do their jobs.
