Controversial hospital plans approved

Controversial proposals to centralise key hospital services have been approved today.

Members of the NHS Sussex board gave the go-ahead to changes that will mean emergency general surgery and orthopaedic surgery will no longer be carried out at Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Patients will have to travel to the Conquest Hospital in St Leonards for treatment instead.

The plans will also lead to stroke services being based in Eastbourne.

All three services are currently provided by both hospitals but health bosses say they must be based on just one site to keep treatment safe and sustainable.

Campaigners say lives will be put at risk and the changes will put other services like maternity under threat.

A public meeting organised by the Save the DGH group is being held at Eastbourne town hall tonight (November 23) at 6pm.
