Shipping containers to help house homeless
1:00pm Thursday 29th November 2012 in News Exclusive By Kimberly Middleton, Acting chief reporter
A city's homeless are to be put up in shipping containers in an audacious bid to ease the housing crisis.
Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) and the team behind the New England Quarter will soon submit a planning application to transform a city centre site into a homeless village with 36 flats, gardens and allotments.
Sussex-based developer QED has already bought the 36 shipping containers which have been converted into studio flats.
The proposal is for two blocks of homes, three and four storeys high, next to The Cobbler’s Thumb in New England Road, in a plot currently used as a car park.
QED and BHT are in talks with planners and hope to move people in as early as May next year.
BHT chief executive Andy Winter said: “It’s great to talk about a solution rather than the problem.”
If given the go-ahead by planners, the units will become homes for people while they search for a permanent place.
Mr Winter said: “It would be people who have lost their jobs or someone who is living in their car while holding down a job but doesn’t have housing.
“Given the desperate housing situation in Brighton and Hove, imaginative solutions are required.
“What really excites me about this opportunity is that land that might otherwise lie idle for five years will be brought back into life and used to provide much-needed temporary accommodation.
“When the site is redeveloped, the accommodation units can be transferred to other locations.”
Addressing problem
Chris Gilbert, QED director, said: “It’s not quite as easy as unloading a container from a lorry, but it’s a lot easier than building flats from scratch.
“We’re not intending to dress them up and pretend they’re not containers.
“I think it could be an exciting way of addressing, quickly, what’s a massive problem.”
The containers are commonly used as homes in Amsterdam, where they form student flats, accommodation for the Salvation Army and even a hotel.
The Brighton containers were originally converted for a social housing project in Holland in 2010, but the order to TempoHousing was cancelled amid funding problems.
The developers and BHT hope to get permission for the units for five years.
Councillor Phelim MacCafferty, deputy leader of the council, said: “This looks like an exciting and innovative proposal and we are aware of other developments which have successfully used containers as the building blocks of successful projects both in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
“We do, of course, need to make sure that the accommodation on offer is of a decent standard and provides safe and warm living conditions.
“I’m looking forward to more details coming forward about how the containers might fit into the proposed site and what the development will look like.”

He obviously earns enough money to pay taxes to subsidise the scum who drift into Brighton for the high life, expecting the streets to be paved with gold.

This is a scandalous disgrace. What next , buy an old warship and turn that into accommodation like the one they got off Mr Hoogstraten and turned into a prison. I know someone who did a bit of time in there and he said it was the worst prison he'd been in. Give it a few years and it'll make Portland Gate look like the Royal Pavilion.

Gotta love the way I get to spend £500 a month to a rich private landlord and in return I get to live in a damp tiny bedsit and the homless get a luxurious one for free! Cant they just die and stop asking me for change !! I dont even have money for myself why do they think I go to work ? To fund their love for special brew? Such a Brighton thing to do to look after the poor and charge them no rent and anyone else who has a low paid job (which is all their is in Brighton) and cannot afford to live here due to the London priced rent (i.e everyone else) gets to pay for their nice little pad! God I hate England, maybe we could pay for their home furnishings next from habitat!

This is a positive starting point, although the miserable trolls will no doubt find fault in just about anything that might help those not as fortunate as themselves!
Then lock the doors and get the containers delivered to one of the huge container ships that are moored offshore unused due to capacity surpluses.
Leave them there for a couple of months and then repatriate them 'post cold turkey' to their town of birth.

I have no objections with helping people that have fallen on hard times, but no time for people who spend all their money on drink and drugs making a nuisance of themselves.
Those sorts of people need to make a choice society or getting off their face, if its option B don't expect me to pay for it or the warm environment to do it in, when i can barley afford to keep a roof over my own head

Since the demand for accommodation in the city is far greater than the supply
how will the housing trust decide who is eligible? Will applicants bid along with others on the housing waiting list?
Will applicants on the housing waiting list be allowed to apply? If the allocation looks dodgy is there a formal complaint process, backed up by statutory housing regulations?

Somethingsarejustwrowell it aligns, because here you are, using your keywords to troll and harass others in the only way you know how, instead of bringing some depth to your posts. I know if I was 'drinking good wine with friends', the last thing I would do is log in from my bedsit to see if people have nothing better to do at 10-30 at night and every 45 minutes prior to that. Get a life .

The people this program looks to help are homeless. As I know many here are unaware of, there are too many homeless people in this City of ours, you must not make the mistake of confusing them with alcoholics or drug addicts or anyone who suffers from any kind of addiction whether visible or not. There are other programs designed and implemented to help treat and curtail their addiction and there is definite progress in this sector.
Homeless people are not of this group however, they are people who have fallen through the cracks of society due to bad luck and a myriad of personal/employment issues which they address through numerous counseling sessions, housing programs, hostels and make use of free sheltering provided by excellent staff who mainly work voluntarily. I think we can all agree there is nothing more sad than knowing a family is having to make use of a homeless shelter. They try to get back into work and contact government officials where possible to try and secure any temporary environment for their family. They do not simply expect a better lifestyle for free. They must go through a lengthy process to secure one of the programs' housing units as these are not simply handed out.
I hope this helps to clarify this and help you re-assess your preconceptions on the different groups of people around Brighton and Hove, how they are portrayed and what can be realistically and appropriately done to help them. I will reading any further comments on this message board with great interest.

Work hard, lead a good life, never take drugs, wash and drink only socially but you do not earn quite enough money to get your own drum so you stay at home with your parents and put your name on the list...... Or. Take drugs, never work, shout at buses, smell like piddle, beg on street corners like a ragged dog, take more drugs, drink Special Brew in parks, scare small children, take more drugs, don't wash, fight and beg some more and you will get your own place. Says it all really.
