The Argus-backed Brighton handball team is setting up a women’s squad because of overwhelming interest since the Olympics.

The freshly christened Brighton Seahawks were founded on the back of the newspaper’s Olympic Legacy campaign.

Since then the team has acquired a training base, found sponsors, had kits made and has now started to play competitively.

Last week we reported that the men had played out a thrilling 9-9 draw with Eastbourne.

But since then they have notched up their first victory with a stunning 24-9 away win against London Olympia B.

Juan Reig, the team’s founder, said: “We are seeing improvements each week and it was great to see our work in training paying off in the game.

“We are progressing well but would really like to get a women’s team going.

“The response to the call for players for the men’s team was fantastic and we hope to have the same with the women’s.”

Training night

A handful of women regularly turn up for training on a Wednesday night, but they need half a dozen more before they can start playing competitively.

Mr Reig added: “The sport was little known before this summer’s Olympics but it has really taken off.

“It is fantastic for anyone wanting to get fit and a great way to meet people.”

Despite the rapid growth of the Seahawks, they are still operating on a limited budget and are on the lookout for potential sponsors and coaches.

Mr Reig added: “I’m doing it all at the moment: I’m captain, coach, treasurer and secretary, so it would be good to get someone in.

“They don’t need to know a great deal about handball but a sporting or coaching background would be good.

“We now have our own kits thanks to Red Frog Recruiting in Hove but still need proper handball goals.”

The Seahawks are next in action on December 9 for their second game against local rivals Eastbourne.

The players train on Wednesday evenings between 8pm and 10pm at Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre.
