Bowled over by fans’ tributes to Tony Greig and Christopher Martin-Jenkins

Cricket fans are paying their respects to two hugely popular figures.

Sussex County Cricket Club has opened books of condolence for former England captain Tony Greig and Test Match Special commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins, who passed away over the festive period.

Fans have been paying tribute to Greig, who played for Sussex from 1967 to 1978 as an all rounder and was captain for four years.

Long-serving broadcaster and journalist Martin-Jenkins was also a great supporter of Sussex.

His son Robin, who played for Sussex for more than 15 years, has thanked fans for the support and tributes since the death of his father on New Year’s Day.

In a statement to members, he wrote: “We have been overwhelmed by the love and kindness everyone has shown and by the truly amazing tributes in the media.

“My dad will obviously be missed but your messages have eased the pain.”

A public memorial service to the commentator is planned in spring.

The book of condolence is available to sign at the PROBIZ County Ground until the end of the month on Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

The book will also be available to sign at a number of events held by the club including a quiz night and members’ lunch later in the month.
