Security teams have moved in to evict protesters against a controversial £94 million link road.

Up to 30 activists are defending trees and occupying tunnels in Crowhurst, near Hastings, as they try to disrupt the construction of the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road.

Protesters are reporting security guards and bailiffs, supported by Sussex Police, began attempts to evict the camp at 8am today.

The main camp, which has been in place since December 21, is located close to Adam’s Farm, Crowhurst.

Sussex Police have confirmed 12 people have been arrested in incidents relating to the protest since it began a month ago.

East Sussex County Council, which is funding the majority of the road, claimed it is needed to create space for jobs, homes and offices.

What they are doing is utterly commendable, namely trying to protect the countryside from being decimated in the name of “progress”. This will soon no longer exist as a quiet and tranquil area for all to enjoy, and shall be transformed into a no-go area just so people can travel between Bexhill to Hastings in their privately owned cars, great. What’s needed is more investment in the trains and buses.
Also, whether these people are “scruffy” or not, really adds nothing, and in fact just detracts from the point.

The purpose of this new road is to take away most of the traffic on the existing road through the populated areas of St.Leonards and Hastings.
Those misguided protesters should be served eviction notices, and then be forced to pay the costs of their removal if they choose to stay. ( Most of them can probably afford to anyway.)

Hastings and the whole of East Sussex is in dire need of decent roads. A motorway along the south coast to Cornwall would be a great thing.
The protesters are a bunch of layabouts and should get jobs !

I fully support the bailiffs and look forward to the new road. Try commuting to the St Leonards industrial estates on the bus/train. A colleague does this and it is two hours each way from Eastbourne. There is nothing wrong with private cars. The problem lies with extremist Greens who wish to dictate how everbody else should live.

And this road will do nothing to relieve the congestion for through traffic. It will just shift the jams to the Ridge (for those that know Hastings). A proper by-pass is required, not this half-hearted bodge-up.

Well if that's the purpose of the new road, it will fail miserably. The only road it will relieve is a short stretch of the Bexhill Road.

Correct in the first sentence, but you obviously know nothing about this road. It will NOT be part of any south coast motorway, and will shift traffic jams to elsewhere in Hastings.
And totally wrong about the protesters. At least they are getting off their arses to do something they believe in.

Try to read properly,I was using future tense not the past or present.This country is the most built up in Europe and has far more road space (1.8% of land area) but has far more congestion in spite of this due to ridiculous road schemes.No other country in Europe is as gridlocked at rush hour...

Not sure what point you are making but it will make the journey better for all people who drive to the St. Leonards industrial estates. It will also make life better for people who live on the coast road. It will attact business to Hastings so helping the young people of the town get decent jobs. No one likes concreting over green areas but sometimes it has to happen. In the 19th century the same arguments were used against the railways as are now used against roads yet the greens now worship the train.

All these wasters supporters must surely know some important points about what they are doing:

1) It will never ever work.
2) It only delays the inevitable.
3) It just costs the tax payer more money to deal with evicting them.
4) It turns the vast majority of the public against them.

Do they care? Not one bit. If you want to look at some of the most arrogant and misguided people in society then don't look at the politicians look at this lot instead.

so its all about this road ,,,what about the "Security teams" + "security guards" used here ! who pays for them what are the cops doing ? this road is needed but the cost will keep going up when they use,,, private security companies,,,

this job is for the cops not some hired help,,this is privatization gone mad,,and it will keep going up in cost to fund some hedge fund overseas and you pay for it

Population of Hastingas and Bexhill approx 120 000, number of protestors evicted about 20. The silent majority are in favour of this road, not the unemployed so far identified from Cardiff, London and Sheffield that have been named when charged by the Police. They will achieve nothing, they do not have local support, apart from a few NIMBYS, Interestingly when the council asked Hastings residents which site they preferred, the Majority chose the cheapest route through the middle of the Valley. The Council selected the current route which skirts the edge using a disused railway line mostly to appease the Environmentalist, this was a more expensive route, should have just gone with what the people wanted and saved money, all is available to see on East Sussex County Council Website. Quicker it is built the better.
