A group of students will be travelling to Indonesia this summer as part of their charitable work with a volunteering specialist organisation.

Nine Year 11 Blatchington Mill students are going to the island of Borneo in July to help with community, environmental and conservation projects.

They will teach some lessons in a small school, help to build a community centre, plant trees, clean beaches and raise awareness about keeping areas clean.

Lauren Drew, 15, said: “I can’t wait to see what we will be. The whole experience will be fantastic and I am really looking forward to all of it.”The students will be working with local people as well as with staff of the volunteering organisation Camps International.

The students will also be able to experience sleeping in a hammock in the rainforest, SCUBA diving and visiting an orang-utan sanctuary.

Camps International is an award-winning expedition specialist that offers responsible travel experiences, developing long-term projects within African, Asian and Latin American communities.

Many of the students have already started raising money for the trip, which includes a charitable contribution to the CAMPS project.

The students have been baking and selling cupcakes, washing cars, running a raffle and are organising a sponsored walk and a bike ride.

English tutor at the school, Rebecca Ewbank, said: “I am sure that the students will learn a great deal about this beautiful country. They will also find out how well they can cope with a very different climate and living conditions. I’m sure that they will all rise to the challenge as they are a fantastic group and are already making every effort to ensure that it is a successful trip.”
