New and slower speed limits are now in force in Brighton and Hove.
From today motorists will have to travel at no more than 20mph in the area from Sackville Road, Hove, in the west to Freshfield Road, Brighton in the east.
The £1.5million project is intended as a way to improve harmony on the streets and make it safer for all.
But the debate over introducing 20mph limits in the centre of Brighton and Hove.
Mark Strong, a member of the city’s transport partnership, said: “Widespread 20mph limits across Brighton and Hove will have the biggest positive impact on the public health project in city since the start of the smoking ban, and maybe even bigger.
“That’s not just my view; it comes from all serious health and transport professionals and years of research.”
But not everyone is convinced.
Ted Kemble, an experienced taxi driver, said: “I really do not think it’s a good use of taxpayers’ money.”
