A 23-year-old man who died running the Brighton Marathon has been named locally as Sam Harper Brighouse.

Mr Harper Brighouse collapsed around mile 16 in Hove on Sunday.

He was whisked to the Royal Sussex County Hospital but tragically passed away hours later.

Joking on his JustGiving charity page before the marathon, he wrote: “Harper’s not going to bottle the marathon.

“I'm running, jogging, crawling the Brighton Marathon for Arms Around The Child (UK) (formerly KCA UK) because I am want to raise money for a good cause.”

Now friends of Mr Harper Brighouse, who said on his Facebook page he attended university in Sheffield and was from London, have donated in his memory.

At 9am today (Monday) 72 people had donated £1,365.43 to the charity which provides loving homes, HIV treatment, protection and respect for children orphaned and affected by HIV/AIDS in India and Africa.

One friend said: “You made a difference to so many people's lives and we'll make sure you make a difference to even more through this page.”

Another said: “Cannot believe this. Taken far too early. Thoughts are with your close family and friends.”

Christopher Griffiths said: “Sam Harper Brighouse..... such a beautiful man. You never failed to amaze me buddy. You'll be sorely missed. RIP. All my love.”

Ruth Merritt said: “Can't believe it. Sam you were a great guy and will be so very missed by everyone who knew you.”

Emma Brattle added: “Sam, I just can't believe it. Such a smashing guy! I hope that they play drum and bass in heaven.”
