A call to end homophobic chants at football matches has been raised in Parliament.
Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas has co-sponsored an early day motion calling on police forces, clubs, supporters and the football authorities to act on the issue.
It comes after the Brighton and Hove Albion Supporter Club and the Gay Football Supporters’ Network published a report that said Albion had faced homophobic abuse at 70% of its games this season.
Dr Lucas, who has supported the Justin Campaign, a Brighton-based group set up in memory of gay footballer Justin Fashanu to tackle homophobia in the game, said: “While real progress has been made in tackling racist abuse in football, homophobic chanting in the stands remains rife.”
The bill has been co-sponsored with Liberal Democrat MP John Leech, who represents South Manchester.
