When the Independent Drug Commission formed last year, members vowed to take a fresh approach to tackle the city’s drug problem.

After more than 12 months of work, that is exactly what we have got.

Many of the recommendations will cause controversy but they deserve our attention.

The group vowed to base their proposals on facts and results rather than how they would play out in the tabloids.

The recommendation for consumption rooms to be established in the city will grab most headlines.

And while it may sound absurd to some at first, there is no denying that the rooms have seen positive results in other countries.

Whatever we like to think, what we are doing at the moment isn’t working.

We need to get on top of the problem and this fresh approach should be welcomed.

There is still work to be done before anything is finalised but this is a start.

Talking point: To what extent do you think drug consumption rooms will help tackle Brighton and Hove's drugs problems?

What do you think should be done to resolve drug-related issues in the city?
