City leaders have welcomed Brighton and Hove Albion’s passage into the play-offs.

The Seagulls secured its spot in the post-season lottery after a 2-1 victory at Leeds United this afternoon.

It means Albion will have to overcome a play-off semi-final and win at Wembley to secure a position in the Premiership for next season.

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat said: “Obviously it’s brilliant news for the team but it’s also great news for the city.

“I think it’s symbolic with the way the city is moving.

“What with Whitehawk FC already gaining promotion and looking to change its name, all this sporting success is fantastic news and I’m backing Albion all the way.”

Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby, who is a season ticket holder at the American Express Community Stadium, said: “It’s fantastic news for the city.

“Obviously I have my fingers crossed and hope that we can make it.

“I have always said that if you want to be classed as a world class city then you need to have a football team that’s going places.

“It’s one of those things that makes Brighton and Hove such a special place.”

Plans are already underway to turn next week’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at The Amex into a celebration.

Albion will be back in action for the play-offs on the following Thursday or Friday with a return leg on Sunday, May 12, or Monday, May 13.

The Wembley final will be on Monday, May 27.

Within minutes of the final whistle, fans took to social media site Twitter to celebrate.
