Polls are now open as hundreds of thousands of people decide who they want to run their local councils for the next four years.

More than 100 seats across West and East Sussex are up for grabs with the winners representing their areas on the county council for the next four years.

In both areas the Conservatives dominate but Liberal Democrats and Labour are hoping to make gains.

The UK Independence Party could also make a strong showing after gathering momentum across the country.

The run-up to the election locally has received national interest with both Labour leader Ed Milliband and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg making visits in recent days.

Polls opened at 7am today and will remain open until 10pm.

Counting will take place in Eastbourne and Hastings tonight once polling stations close.

Results from the rest of the county will be announced tomorrow morning.

There are no elections in Brighton and Hove this year with the next vote in 2015.
