Two men appeared in court charged with conspiracy to commit burglary after people reported suspicious behaviour.

Police were alerted to suspicious behaviour at two properties in Newhaven and three in Seaford on May 8 Now officers are urging people, especially those who are vulnerable, to be careful when answering the door to strangers and consider the use of a door chain.

Sergeant Stuart Mullins said: "The whole of Seaford is a designated No Cold Calling Zone so any strangers knocking on doors should naturally be viewed with suspicion.

“If you are suspicious or concerned in any way don't answer the door and call the police.

"If you are vulnerable and have not got a door chain please consider getting one fitted.

“For any vulnerable people in Seaford, who are unable to afford one I may be able to supply a door chain for you to get a friend or relative to fit.

“I would like to emphasise though that Seaford is a low crime area and a very safe place to live.

“We do however rely on the public as being our eyes and ears and reporting anything they see that is suspicious. In this case local officers responded to information phoned in by the local residents."

John Ward, 29, and Richard McCann, 26, both unemployed of Manchester, appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on May 10.

They were remanded in custody to appear before Lewes Crown Court on July 19.
