The family of a young father who died following a hit-and-run crash was a "loving and devoted dad".

Relatives of 20-year-old Charlie Hancock spoken of their sense of loss as murder squad detectives continue to hold a suspect.

It is believed he had been involved in a row with a man inside a car before being hit by the vehicle in Rowan Way, Bognor, West Sussex, just after 10pm on Monday.

Mr Hancock, of Nyetimber Lane, Pagham, was taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, where he was pronounced dead early the following morning.

Police launched a murder inquiry and detectives from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team are continuing to detain a 41-year-old man believed to have been the car's driver.

In a statement issued through Sussex Police tonight, relatives of Mr Hancock, who leaves behind a baby son, said: "Charlie was a larger than life character who was liked and remembered by everyone who met him.

"He was fearless, honourable, loving and devoted to his family as a son, brother, uncle and father.

"His legacy is that so many of the tears shed by us now stem from memories of the many times he made us laugh."

Messages of condolence have been paid online to Mr Hancock. On Twitter, one person wrote: "Rip Charlie Hancock, you were a good mate, just shows how quickly life can be taken away, thinking of you and your family."

A police spokesman said: "Detectives from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team have launched a murder investigation into his death.

"They are appealing for witnesses who saw two men having an altercation while in a grey Chrysler Voyager vehicle in Rowan Way, Bognor, between 9.30pm and 10pm on Monday to come forward."
