The victim of a hit-and- run has come home – four years after the accident.

Oliver Bennett was left needing 24-hour care after he was hit by a van while walking home from his birthday night out.

But after lots of hard work and fundraising, his family are welcoming him back to their Uckfield home today.

Father Andy said it had been a long wait but the family were “really excited” about Oliver returning.

In June 2009 Oliver suffered severe head injuries when he was hit by a van near Lewes.

He had decided to walk home along the A27 after celebrating his 25th birthday in Brighton.

He was found by the side of the road.

After months in Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre, then a home in Wiltshire, Oliver was moved to the Chaseley Trust home in Eastbourne.

His parents Andy and Jill took it in turns to make the 20-mile trip to visit him.

The car the family used to drive to see Oliver has racked up 60,000 miles in the past four years.

Mr Bennett said it would be amazing for all the family to be able to sit down to dinner together for the first time in four years.

He wanted to thank all the people who donated to the cause, which has allowed them to kit out their home with important modifications so that Oliver can live there.

He said: “It is an open house on Monday for anyone who wants to enjoy the moment. They are more than welcome.

“Many people generously donated.

“It has been a bit of a long slog, it felt as though this day would never come.”

Oliver’s great-aunt, Barbara Cooper, added: “This is what the family has wanted for four years, so it is wonderful.

“And we want to thank all those people who have raised lots of money to help get him here.”
