Sussex’s Police and Crime Commissioner looks set to cost more than its pre-shakeup equivalent.

A Home Affairs Committee report has revealed that Sussex’s PCC budget is currently 0.9% more than the Sussex Police Authority’s was.

Official figures revealed the Police Authority budget for 2012/2013 was £1.175m, compared to £1.184 for the PCC’s budget for 2013/2014, an increase of £0.01m.

Meanwhile Sussex PCC Katy Bourne was named as one of the higher earning PCCs in the UK.

She takes home an annual income of £75,000, compared to other forces including Lincolnshire, Wiltshire, Surrey and Suffolk whose PCCs are earn between £65,000 and £70,000.

However, there are also PCCs such as Kent’s Anne Barnes who do earn more (£85,000).

She did not tell the committee howmany hours she works a week, but did confirm she does not hold a second job.

She said: “I welcome the report by the Home Affairs Committee and recognise the need for clear and objective scrutiny of PCCs, which holds them accountable to the electorate.

“An effective system of balance and checks is vital in order to maintain the highest standards of integrity and competence.

“This report shows that the cost of my office, as a percentage of the total police force area budget, is the seventh lowest in the country. This is despite Sussex Police having the 14th largest net revenue budget of the 43 police forces in England and Wales.

“The 0.9% increase in the cost of my office compared to the previous Police Authority relates directly to inflationary measures which, for reasons of sounds financial management, I have included within my budget.

“I am committed to further driving down costs and increasing efficiencies.

“Demonstrating value for money is a key priority within my Police and Crime Plan and I have set a specific target to work closely with Sussex Police and our partners to reduce bureaucracy and waste in order to meet the financial challenges ahead.”
