Sexism is being challenged with the launch of a new campaign.

Spot the Sexism is a month-long campaign that kicks off in Brighton this week and aims to gather evidence of sexism in the media and advertisements.

The project comes following evidence of media sexism in last year’s Leveson enquiry and the success of recent social media campaigns.

Members of Brighton’s Women’s Voices are calling on the city’s residents to send photos and links of examples of sexism to spotthesexismbrighton.blogspot.co.uk or tweet examples using the hashtag #sexistpress.

Lisa Dando, director of Brighton Women’s Centre, said: “Messages that women are to be judged on how they look before anything else, that they are less able and less likely to achieve great things, are put across loud and clear in the media.

“They’re in the way women are pictured and described, and they’re in the predominance of men as commentators and authoritative voices.

“The issues behind this are complex, but one thing is simple – these messages are sexist and put women down for being just that – women. It’s time for that to stop.”

The campaign is being backed by Brighton and Hove’s Green MP Caroline Lucas, who will present the findings and a sample month’s media and advertising examples to Maria Miller, Minister for Women and Equalities.
